About CampusCam

Camera mounted to roof
Mounted in a glass globe (inset), CampusCam is seen from the courtyard.

CampusCam became a feature in inside.uthscsa, the university web portal, in 2004. Atop the seventh floor of the School of Medicine, the camera gives a panoramic view of the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio.

"People always ask 'What's the weather like outside?' because so few employees have an office with a window," said Jim Barrett, webmaster. "Here's their window."

CampusCams were added in 2006 at the Harlingen and Laredo campuses. Links:

An image from the San Antonio CampusCam appears on the portal's log-in page. Users can select the link "Live View & Weather" to see the live picture. It refreshes every 10 seconds. The page also carries the San Antonio temperature, humidity, wind speed and forecast from the Weather Channel.

CampusCam in San Antonio is remotely controlled so it can send different views. There are three common views:

  • Campus entrance on Floyd Curl Drive
  • Academic and Administration Building
  • North Campus buildings
