Minutes (Oct. 27, 2004) Web Advisory Committee
Present: Heather Cura, Alan Miller, Dr. Keith Krolick, Thomas Anthony, Kat Myers, Jesse Gomez, Tom Raymond, Doug Hartzler, Jim Barrett and Mary Yanes.
Heather Cura, substituting for the chair, opened the meeting, and received approval of the Aug. 25 minutes.
Jim Barrett gave the webmaster's report. He said:
- Server traffic in September rose 101 percent, to 1,835,893 page views over the same month in 2003.
- Since July, the campus calendar has grown to 18 calendars with 500 postings.
- The clinical studies database, rolled out in September, contains 78 studies, up from 75.
In new business, Mr. Barrett asked Jesse Gomez about the Human Resources Office's new website for job seekers,
and Tom Raymond of the library about its project to work with the Bexar County Health Information Network
on a web site about health issues and local resources for patients. Mr. Gomez and Mr. Raymond each gave brief descriptions
of the projects.
In old business, the committee received an update on the redesign of the university portal, inside.uthscsa.edu. Mr. Barrett
said the redesign went into production in September with favorable comment. Dr. Keith Krolick and Kat Myers
suggested changing the interface to make it easier for users to see the link for preparing purchase requisitions.
Doug Hartzler said the portal offers some options to change the display and he would provide information on other ways of displaying the requisition link.
Ms. Cura asked whether the portal contains software for threaded discussions. She said the School of Nursing would
be interested in using such software for its students. Mr. Hartzler said several features will become available with
the latest portal software upgrade due in the next few months. He said he would summarize the new features and send
the information to the committee.
In other business, Mr. Barrett said the switchover to the Google search appliance won't be complete
until mid-2005. He asked the committee for advice on whether to include non-uthscsa.edu web sites, hosted
by the Health Science Center, in the search engine's index. He said some sites are for professional
organizations and may not be pertinent to users who want to search the Health Science Center only. Ms. Cura said she
saw no reason to index non-uthscsa sites since the search engine would find links to the sites if they are on official uthscsa.edu sites.
There was no other business and the meeting was adjourned.
