The chair, Dr. Ray Palmer, opened the meeting, and received approval of the April 30 minutes. Jim Barrett presented the webmaster's report. He said:- Server traffic rose 40 percent in May, to 902,211 page views.
- Web sites would be validated for compliance with accessibility standards during the first week of July. Owners of non-compliant sites will be notified.
- St. Mary's University has offered to share its open-source campus calendar software. A try-out at the Health Science Center is expected in July.
- He asked to remove the term "homeland security" on the university's front-page link to campus status. Members expressed a desire to retain some security-oriented presence and agreed to use the term "emergency preparedness" instead of "homeland security."
- Representatives of the School of Nursing had requested blocking a web site once associated with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. Faculty members in the past had circulated the URL to students, but now the site has a new owner and shows sexually explicit material. Members discussed pros and cons of blocking the site, and requested that the webmaster ask for advice from the university's legal counsel.
- Telecommunications & Networking had asked for the committee's opinion about adding faculty and staff members' home phone numbers and addresses, and spouse names to the printed and web-based university telephone book. The suggestion originated in the Faculty Senate. Opinions were mixed. In response to a question, Jesse Gomez said faculty members may supply or suppress such information when they complete their individual Biodoc form.
In old business, Dr. Palmer asked the webmaster to demonstrate a test web site designed to display detailed maps of the campus. Mr. Barrett said, in the interest of time, he would send the URL to committee members and invite their feedback.
Dr. Palmer asked if there was any new busines. He then adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 30, 10-11 a.m., in the Computing Resources conference room.
