Minutes (April 26, 2006) Web Advisory Committee
Present: Dr. Alison Beck, Heather Cura, Dr. Keith Krolick, Debbie Valle, Dr. Sara Gill, Tom Raymond, Alan Miller, Dr. Robert Badgett, Albert Preciado,
Julie Newberry, Shirley Erp, Susan Hallmark, Mary Yanes, and Jim Barrett.
The chair, Dr. Alison Beck, called the meeting to order. Committee members approved the Feb. 22 minutes.
Jim Barrett gave the webmaster's report. He said:
- Server traffic in March rose 47 percent, to 2,664,994 page views.
- No legal advice had been received from UT System on compliance with state web accessibility proposals.
- The campus calendar software was updated in March, and now allows people who submit events to
include a map showing the location of their event.
- A test of Contribute, a content management system, was successful, and helped produce the new site of DCATS,
http://www.uthscsa.edu/dcats/.
- He had spoken with Dr. Robert Kaminski about making portions of ECV data public on the web site that shows faculty research profiles.
In new business, Dr. Beck said proposed revisions of the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) about web policy had been
distributed. She asked Mr. Barrett, who edited the draft, to comment. He said the proposals are intended
to remove outdated language, and group web-oriented policies in one section of the HOP. Dr. Keith Krolick asked whether
the policy should contain language about the need to maintain campus information security. Shirley Erp said the committee
ought to look at the proposed policies with special consideration for information security. The committee
agreed to add a statement about security and links to the Information Security Office's web site. Dr. Beck said the committee would re-evaluate the HOP proposal at
its next meeting.
In a second item of new business, Mr. Barrett summarized the findings of the Working Group on
Spanish Translations on the Web. The group met in February to satisfy Texas SB 216, which requires state agencies and educational institutions
to consider the need for Spanish translations on their web sites.
He said the working group prioritized the types of information that would
be most useful to Spanish speakers. He presented recommendations to create two web pages
with information in Spanish. The committee members discussed the need for translations. Some members questioned whether
the target audience would get enough information in Spanish to be well informed, or whether the target
audience would be using the web at all.
After the discussion, Dr. Beck asked Mr. Barrett if he had received enough feedback to proceed. He said he had.
There was no other business, and the meeting was adjourned.
