Minutes (Feb. 22, 2006) Web Advisory Committee

Present: Dr. Alison Beck, Heather Cura, Dr. Keith Krolick, Alan Miller, Ida Garcia, Albert Preciado, Julie Newberry, Mary Yanes, and Jim Barrett.

The chair, Dr. Alison Beck, called the meeting to order. Committee members approved the Jan. 25 minutes.

Jim Barrett gave the webmaster's report. He said: In old business, the committee reviewed a proposed addition to the Handbook of Operating Procedures titled "Outsourced Web Development and Maintenance." The committee reviewed the proposal July 27, 2005, and recommended it to the Computing Resources Committee. The web committee again recommended the proposal, and, at the suggestion of Dr. Keith Krolick, said it should be reviewed by the Information Security Council before it is sent to the Computing Resources Committee for approval.

In a second item of old business, Mr. Barrett reported on a meeting Feb. 8 in Austin about pending changes to the Texas Administrative Code about web accessibility. He said the legal counsel for the state Department of Information Resources, which hosted the event, cautioned attendees to get legal advice before seeking any exemptions as allowed under the pending changes. The committee had discussed the proposed changes at its Jan. 25 meeting.

The committee members renewed the discussion, and addressed several issues including the legality of exemptions, the need for web developer training, and how accessibility issues figured in long-range plans for campus technology.

Alan Miller suggested that the committee write a letter seeking answers to its questions about legal issues, enforcement, accessibility training and compliance. Dr. Beck said she would do so, and send it to Dr. John Olson, chair of the Computing Resources Committee.

There was no other business, and the meeting was adjourned.
