- Open Issues
Fred Dziuk, Telecommunications & Networking, talked about the 129.111 domain and restricting access. Fred also talked about firewalls and filtering traffic or restricting access to the Internet.
The firewall is looking for port scanning and other activity that indicates possible network intrusions. Right now T & N is just logging the reports. As for individual web servers, Fred recommended to the committee members that products could be purchased in the range of $300 to $500 to help maintain security on servers.
Currently, there are approximately 150 servers on campus. T & N is looking at the possibility of procedures for servers and firewalls. Ideally, the best security would involve coming up with a web server outside the area protected by a firewall.
The second question dealt with addressing the issue of separating content for internal and public content use. Possibly, look into "intranet" versus Internet usage.
Fred discussed ways to direct public and internal visitors to apprpriate websites, and said NT authentication could be used for those who need access to the university intranet but were physically located outside the network.
The committee was briefed on Pacer, the institutional web server, being replaced by a new server, Pacer is currently housing about 120 websites. Some glitches might be encountered in March when the migration of sites takes place.
Jim Barrett, HSC Webmaster, briefed the committee on the search spider. Jim has indexed over 12,000 URL's. He has discovered some information holes and is patching them manually. Jim has some departments that have no text links at all on the web pages. He has notified some of the departments involved and discussed this issue with them.
Jim has spoken with Wayne Pierson and Dr. Tony Infante about the possibility of building a web-based database of human trials currently being offered at the HSC. Both have endorsed the idea and will continue to work with Jim on getting the sites listed on the Internet.
- New Business
Jim Barrett announced that he would be hosting a webmaster's meeting on March 7.
